Counselors/Social Workers: Cindy Schultz

Counseling Program at Council Grove Elementary and Middle School

Grades 4 - 8

by Cindy Schultz

What is a School Counselor?

A counselor is someone you can talk to when you feel happy, proud, excited, terrific, fantastic, wonderful, sad, mad, worried, lonely, confused, scared . . .  A counselor is someone who listens no matter what you have to say.

A School Counselor is someone who helps ALL students.

What does a School Counselor do?

Classroom Guidance

The school counselor meets with classes and discusses information on topics and issues that align with the USD 417 and State of Kansas Guidance and Counseling Standards.  The topics, by grade, include:

Grade 4:

  • interpersonal skills and peer pressure
  • impact of bullying
  • career exploration

Grade 5:

  • interpersonal skills, peer pressure, and stress
  • personal interests and career exploration
  • connection between school and work

Grades 6-8:

  • peer pressure and bullying
  • alcohol and other drug awareness
  • career investigation and planning

Group Guidance

The school counselor may also meet with small groups of students who have common interests, concerns, or needs.  Groups usually meet one time each week for six to eight weeks as the members explore new skills and strategies to help them grow in the areas listed above.

Individual Guidance

Meeting with students individually is also the role of the school counselor as they work together to develop a plan to address issues or concerns that limit the student's ability to grow personally, socially, and/or academically.

Consultation

Your school counselor consults and teams with many different people in an effort to support students as they grow to their greatest potential in all areas: personally, socially, and academically.  Parents, teachers, administrators, and community resource people and agencies are a few of these people.

How can a student see the School Counselor?

  • Self referral
  • Parent referral
  • Administrative referral
  • Teacher or other staff referral
  • Referral by a friend
  • Drop in
