Pioneer Day

Prairie Heights Elementary School Pioneer Day Activities

by Mrs. Sharon Koons and Mrs. Ann Sparke

On Tuesday, Nov. 25, the students at the Prairie Heights Elementary School at Dwight celebrated their pioneer heritage by participating in activities that recognized how the early-day pioneers lived their lives.

Each class prepared an activity related to the pioneer way of life and shared it with the other classes.  Mrs. Jean Johnson's kindergarten class made corn husk dolls and a button toy.  Mr. Craig Miller's 1st grade class made butter using whole cream.  Mrs. Elizabeth Brooks' 2nd grade class shared and modeled vintage clothing loaned from the Kaw Mission.

Ann Sparke, para-educator, led Ms. Christa Miller's 3rd grade class in making "Bread In A Bag".  Even though the pioneers did not make bread in bags, the students learned the bread-making process and how subjects such as reading, math and science are important in everyday activities, such as food preparation.  The students agreed the pioneer women had to work very hard to make bread often for their families since they could not buy it in modern grocery stores.

Volunteers assisting with the "Bread In A Bag" activity were:  Carla Kormanick, Amber Jones, Penny True, Gail Daugherty, Tim King, Claudette Esau, Elaine Hrabe, Marlene Patry, Dorothy Gallaway, Connie Burton and Shareen Johnson.  Kim Koegegeboehn, para-educator, also assisted with the activity.

Mrs. Anne Robidou's 4th grade class shared games that the pioneer children might have enjoyed playing, such as jacks, marbles and a tin can game.

A Thanksgiving holiday meal, which was served on long tables, was enjoyed by all.
