Language Arts
The broad heading of Language Arts covers the subjects of writing, research, penmanship, and speaking/listening. The writing curriculum includes narrative writing, expository writing, persuasive writing, and technical writing. These different types of writing are also called "modes." Each writing mode also covers six different writing traits. These six traits are Ideas and Content, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions.
The USD 417 Language Arts curriculum is in draft form and was completed by the K-12 Language Arts Subject Area Committee (SAC) during the summer of 2008. The curriculum will be piloted and adjusted during the 2008-09 school year. Our local curriculum is aligned with the Kansas Writing Standards as well as being aligned from grade level to grade level K-12. The focus of each grade level is stated at the beginning of each document. The high school subjects of Speech, Drama, and Journalism are scheduled to be completed the summer of 2009.
