Our Vision:
To create an innovative and accountable learning environment where a positive, attentive, and engaging attitude leads to increased energy, productivity and, ultimately, sustained academic success
Our Goals:
• To engage at risk students in learning
• To increase yearly academic progress
• To provide an opportunity for all students to complete the
requirements for a high school diploma
Description:
MAP is an academic intervention program designed for academically at risk regular education students in grades 5-12. At risk status may be due to behavior, attendance, medical issues, organizational skills, or other extenuating circumstances. MAP opportunities may be available to special education; however, priority is given to general education students without an Individual Education Plan. The target number of students is four at any one time depending upon the needs of the group.
MAP offers an extended school day beginning at 8:30 a.m. and ending at 5:45 p.m. Monday thru Thursday. Fridays will offer students the opportunity to return to their referring school for planned sustained learning. The duration of the MAP experience for each individual student will vary according to his or her own needs and academic competencies.
MAP students in grades five through eight do not have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities while in the program. Participation for high school students is determined on an individual basis.
MAP recognizes, and depends on, the crucial role of the classroom teachers. Academic support for students and staff, lesson plans, assignments, materials, scoring, and grading are provided by the classroom teacher and coordinated by the office of the referring school.
MAP may include instructional time for enhanced academic and life skills upon completion of classroom assignments. Social skills, conflict resolution, career investigations, and community projects may be included in the support curriculum with the use of materials such as Accelerated Math, Academy of Reading, School Power, Fighting Invisible Tigers, Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens, FISH Philosophy, and electronic portfolios.
Referral:
MAP referrals are through the building principal as initiated by
counselors, teachers, parents, or students. An informal process
will be completed at the building level to try other strategies
before the student is referred to MAP.
