Sophomores and Parents Meeting February 24

There will be a special meeting for all CGHS Sophomores and their parents on Wednesday, February 24, at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium. At that time we intend to have the results available from the Asset Test that each CGHS Sophomore will have taken on Wednesday, February 10. We hope to see every CGHS Sophomore and a Sophomore parent on the 24th.

We continuously strive for processes to help our kids to be career and college ready. We revised the process for parent-student advising four years ago to improve our connections between school and home. We also used this to improve our procedures for pre-enrolling. As administrators and counselors met in December to prepare for pre-enrollment, we chose to place a special focus on the sophomores. The sophomore year is a critical year for a student to make important academic choices for his/her final two years of high school in order to create the best preparation for life after high school.

In the junior and senior years, a student experiences fewer required courses and more elective options. We need to provide more information about these elective options to our sophomores. In addition to the Career and Technical Education programs offered at CGHS in the areas of Agriculture, Business, and Family and Consumer Sciences; there are courses through Flint Hills Technical College and Butler Community College.  We also offer Edgenuity online courses here at CGHS as well as rigorous Advanced Placement courses certified by the CollegeBoard.

An additional contributing factor in our decision to focus on our sophomores was the lack of assessment information we possessed on our current sophomores, the Class of 2018. State assessment data, up to this point, has been minimal for our current sophomores as revisions have occurred at the state level in recent years. We also did not provide 8th grade ACT testing, previously referred to as EXPLORE, for the Class of 2018.

In January, the USD 417 Board of Education approved purchasing Asset Testing for every CGHS sophomore. The Asset Test is a test used as an entrance exam by area technical colleges and community colleges. The scores on the Asset exam will inform sophomores and their parents of the potential for entering into technical or community college coursework in their junior year, as well as help them know the skills in which they may need to improve.
