Homework  Activities

Home

Note:

     These activities are strictly optional!

They are intended to give families some ideas of how to work on academic skills with their children at home.

I will not take a grade / check these activities.

* There are also PowerPoint flashcards located on our classroom homepage. * Topics: sight words, letter identification, blending sounds to make words, number identification, patterns, etc.

READING

1. Ask your child to find 3 - 5 items in your home that have the /m/ sound in
   their name.

Example:  mop, meatball, mom, etc.

2. Have your child practice writing these sight words:
and, we, mom

NOTE:

At this point in our writing, the children are using what we call Inventive Spelling. We are asking the children to write what they hear and that means, in most cases, the spelling won't be absolutely correct.  For example, if your child wants to write the sentence, "I went to the park.", it might come out as, "I wt to the prc."

Some sight words (I, my, you, is, to, the, etc.) are required to be spelled correctly, but for other words that we haven't memorized yet, we write down beginning sounds, ending sounds, and as many middle sounds that are heard.

Please do not tell your children how to spell a word, as that takes away their chance to use their sound knowledge on their own and can also cause them to not want to write for me at school!

         MATH

1. Ask your child to count to 10.

2. Have your child practice writing these numbers:  0 - 10

3. Ask your child to count out 10 objects for you.

Example: Count out 10 pieces of elbow macaroni or 10 Cheerios.

4. Have your child try and find examples of circles, triangles, squares,      and rectangles around your house.

Example:  a door could be a rectangle, a clock could be a circle, etc.
