5th Grade Information

by Becky Catlin

Book 2                            Greetings!

5th Graders are hard at work and going strong.  What a wonderful group of students we have!  They grow up so much during this year, not only physically, but also intellectually and socially.

We have many math skills needing EXTRA practice at home.

*For starters, multiplication facts are a must! PLEASE practice these at home. Knowing facts quickly and accurately will be a great bonus for all math. It is very crucial for quick and positive math growth now and in the middle school years.  Math confidence stems from a good knowledge of basic facts. Please practice them at home.  5th graders have a math fact quiz nearly every day of the week.

*It's time to start working on your measurements. (e.g. How many cups are in a pint?  How many quarts in a gallon?  How many feet in a mile? etc.)  These are some of the basic conversions 5th graders are expected to know before advancing to 6th grade.  Mrs. Catlin will be sending home a complete list of expectations for measurements in the 5th grade standards later in the year.  Please work on these and practice them daily.

*We will be doing Super 6 and Power Drills this year.  These give us great practice with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, both with and without decimals.  Please double check all work.  Power Drills are due every Thursday.  Super 6's are done in class daily with a Quick Check Quiz every Friday.

*Formative tests will be used to help prepare us for the Kansas State Assessments.  Math tests will be in late March.

*In Social Studies we are studying geography skills, and early America.

*Our annual field trip to Exchange City in Kansas City, MO will take place on May 12. We will not begin preparing for it until after state assessments in the spring.

Thank you for sharing your 5th grade child with me.
