Mrs. Stone's 3rd Grade

by Vicki Stone

The third graders have been studying Bess Beetles in science.  They learned the parts of the beetles.  They compared and contrasted them to the crayfish that we learned about earlier in the year.

The beetle is roped! Ready to start pulling paper clips!

On November 8, they had a "Beetle Pull"!They wanted to find out if a beetle could pull its own weight.  First each group had to "lasso" their beetle with dental floss.  On the other end of the floss they attached an open paper clip. Students added paper clips one by one to see how many paper clips their beetle could pull.  Most groups pulled around 30 paper clips!

Pull, Beetle, pull!

Next each group weighed their beetle.  The beetles weighed between one and two clips.

Wow!  Beetles can pull almost 30 times their own weight!  That would be like a third grader carrying around 30 other third graders!
